Interview de Kelly brother - Sisterhood

1/ Hi! So first, thank you for taking some time to answer our questions. Can you start the discussion by telling us who you are and how could you define the sisterhood?

My name is Kelly Brother, I run xsisterhoodx.com. xsisterhoodx is a zine/community written for, by, and about the ladies of the straightedge and/or hardcore scenes. The goal is to unite rather than divide, people of sexes who are, straightedge but not hardcore, hardcore but not straightedge and every variation in-between are welcome. The idea is to foster open communication and create a resource which is as objective as it is informative. We have articles, reviews, message boards, a contest every month, profiles etc. Girls and guys from all around the world can use xsisterhoodx.com to connect.

2/How and when did the sisterhood's project started?

1996 a girl named Circe from Cincinnati, Ohio began searching the web for straightedge girls. To her surprise almost all the websites she found were for and about guys. Circe set out to create the first website for the straight edge girl. She registered a free tripod site and began the xsisterhoodx discussion list.

Around the same time that xsisterhoodx was starting up I was searching for straight edge girls on the web and happened to stumble upon the xsisterhoodx discussion list. Every day I engrossed myself in my email. Hundreds of girls posted to the list, each one with their own stories, ideas, and struggles. I was hooked. Not long after I joined Circe posted on the list that she could no longer run the xsisterhoodx site or list. At that point I volunteered to take over the website while another girl took over the list.

>From the moment I took over the site I had visions of it becoming a positive community for all the girls in hardcore and straightedge. It took me a long time to get xsisterhoodx where it is today and I have no intentions of stopping any time soon.

3/More generally, what do you think about women's situation in the world nowadays?

I can only speak from my own limited point of view. My situation is quite good. I have a good job and I am respected in my field. I think nowadays women have a lot of choices, which I think is what is at the heart of feminism. Women can choose to be housewives or high powered executives. Women are only limited by the choices that they make.

4/ Do you think that the sisterhood can be a way to change some things? to help girls to be stronger and more pride of themselves?

I think xsisterhoodx is a powerful resource for any girl looking for support or answers in the hardcore and straightedge scenes. I’ve heard from girls from all over the world. Some girls are from really positive scenes were they experienced no discrimination at all. Others come from scenes where girls are treated as objects and pretty much told to get out of hardcore or stand on the sidelines. Xsisterhoodx is a starting point, a place where girls and guys can go to get advice, read other’s experiences, and relate to one another. This type of support system enables girls to make better choices and I guess, in a way to feel stronger. It’s a hell of a lot easier to be the only girl in school who’s into hardcore or straightedge when you know there are hundreds of other girls just like you a mouse click away; girls who are dealing with the same issues and feelings that you are.

5/What's your point of view on animals right and veganism? is it also an important thing for you and for the girls in sisterhood or not that much?

I myself am not vegan nor am I vegetarian. It’s not something that is an important part of my life, but I recognize that it is for a segment of the xsisterhoodx population and I try to support and respect their lifestyle.

6/Actually we can see that there are more and more groups like sisterhood which fight for feminism and/or sxe, do you think that this movement will stay strong years after years or that it will decline one day?

As long as there is inequality there will be groups fighting for equality. I don’t feel that xsisterhoodx is necessarily a feminist website. Xsisterhoodx stands for a lot of ideas that stretch far beyond the confines and stereotypes associated with feminism. I think as xsisterhoodx matures it will remain a positive resource for people of all ages and genders.

7/To conclude; just say what you want and say hello to who you want!

I guess I just want to thank everyone who supports and uses the site, all the girls and guys with positive attitudes who have contributed and helped promote what xsisterhoodx stands for, and my future husband, Tim, for supporting and helping me out when ever I need him.
